Day Trip To Berat With Lunch In Local Family
ABOUT TRIP
Berat is inarguably one of the most beautiful towns in Albania, known as the “White City” for its striking white-washed houses. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features stunning Ottoman and medieval architecture, rich history and culture, and authentic Albanian cuisine. On this day trip, we’ll explore the beauty of Berat and enjoy a delicious lunch with a local family.
We’ll begin our journey with a convenient hotel pickup in Tirana or Durrës. Our experienced English-speaking guide will be with you throughout the trip, sharing fascinating insights into Berat’s history, culture, and architecture.
Our first stop will be the Mangalem neighborhood, one of the oldest and most picturesque parts of Berat. Here, we’ll explore the King Mosque, a beautiful 15th-century Ottoman mosque that features a stunning mihrab and minaret. We’ll also visit the 14th-century Helveti Teke, a dervish lodge that showcases the spiritual and mystical side of Berat’s Ottoman heritage.
Next, we’ll head to Berat Castle, a medieval fortress that overlooks the town and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Inside the castle, we’ll visit the Onufri Museum, which features an impressive collection of 16th-century icons painted by the renowned artist Onufri and his students. We’ll also explore the castle’s churches, which date back to the 13th and 14th centuries and offer a glimpse into the religious life of medieval Berat.
After our castle tour, we’ll head to a local family’s home inside the castle, where you’ll get to taste some of Albania’s most delicious dishes. We’ll start with byrek, a savory pastry made with flaky phyllo dough and filled with cheese or spinach. Then we’ll enjoy fergese, a rich and creamy dish made with roasted peppers, tomatoes, and cheese. You’ll also get to taste traditional bread and washed it down with a glass of raki, Albania’s famous spirit.
During lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to meet a local family, learn more about their traditions and customs, and get a taste of authentic Albanian cuisine.
Finally, our tour will end with a stop at the new bridge, where you can take the best pictures of Mangalem known as the part of 1001 windows.
